Blackbird Beta: Early Access at Morgenstern's Bananas
The first premium membership program powered by Blackbird’s technology platform arrives
Today we are introducing another beta project built on Blackbird’s loyalty and membership rails, focused on a new kind of paid premium access. Unlike Gertie’s tiered Friends & Family loyalty program (launched on Blackbird early April), where the only way to accrue status is to just do the work of becoming a regular, this program, launching today, uses Blackbird to jumpstart their audience building efforts by offering paid premium access to all comers.
The drop in question is the Bananas Country Club and these guys (above), Bosworth Banana, Cal Coconut, and Sherman Citrus. This cheeky membership card set arrives just in time for spring, and also just in time for Bananas, a confectionary concept store from the team behind Morgenstern’s, the small batch Greenwich Village ice cream parlor that’s become a go-to for scoop heads across the city. Pastry chef turned ice cream hype whisperer Nick Morgenstern has always possessed a little Willy Wonka whimsy, and a sense of playfulness pervades his latest venture: an experimental Lower East Side outpost dedicated to dairy-free soft-serve. There will be a rotating roster of flavors, ranging from yuzu to sesame-caramel and, yes, the joint’s namesake banana. By purchasing an early-access Bananas Country Club membership (available today here), members join a loyalty program that entitles them to one free cone or cup per day between April 20-30, 2023 — aka Bananas’ first ten days of operation. Bananas members will also have access to future tastings, the availability to provide feedback on their experience, and a hand in choosing new flavors.
While Bananas early access membership ends on April 30, its loyalty program continues. Beginning May 1, shop visitors can mint their free membership cards on the spot, beginning with “Cal Coconut” status and leveling up to “Sherman Citrus” by their 20th visit. Every tap-in earns guests $FLY, Blackbird’s native reward token, while every fifth visit yields things like topping upgrades and Full Pour cone drippers, which sounds like a power-up if ever there was one.
